This is a full day tour with a hike of 20km from Togendai to Gora climbing 1300m over the day and incorporating interesting train and gondola rides. We will visit Owakudani, Lake Ashi and the Otome pass before completing our day at the onsen.
This exact itinerary of this tour varies according to the time of year as we will be making the most of the sunlight and enjoying the sunset from the best locations as well as fitting in with the railway and gondola timetable.
A typical tour starts with pick up by car from the Hakone area to take you to Gora where we will ride the Funicular tram to Sounzan and then the gondola to Togendai. This is a fascinating journey. We travel via Owakudani, a volcanic valley with active sulphur vents and hot springs, where we will have a tour of the area as well as a chance to buy the famous black eggs rumoured to give you an extra 7 years of life.
When we arrive at Togendai we will follow the north edge of beautiful Lake Ashi which will give us some great views and then we start our climb up to the Otome pass. From here, on a clear day we will enjoy impressive views of Mt.Fuji. One of the things I love about this tour is the great views we have for the whole first half of the hike.
From the Otome pass we will follow the Hakone ridge line over to Kintokyama where we will have a traditional lunch of noodles looking across to Mt.Fuji and back to Owakudani. After lunch we will follow the ridge around and over to Myojingatake through high grasslands with great 360 views of Fuji, Kamiyama, and all the way down to Odawara and the sea.
Eventually we descend into a beautiful forest as we walk back to Gora at sunset. We complete our day by visiting the onsen in Gora, if desired. After which you will be dropped off at your pick up point in the Hakone area.

The Kumano Kodo refers to a set of four pilgrimage routes that lead to the Kumano Sanzan, or the three grand shrines of the Kumano sect of Shinto. As a birthplace of Buddhism in Japan and the heart of its intersection with Japan's indigenous, nature-worshiping religions, travelers will be trekking through one of the country's most spiritually and historically important regions.
